Preston Academy of English works closely with Student Xpress who are looking for hosts for our foreign students who will be coming to Preston for educational and cultural visits.
These visits can last from a fortnight to 6 months or more.
What is involved in hosting?
Student Xpress are looking for hosts who will enjoy having students from all over the world to live with them as a family member.
Hosts should encompass British values, such as individual liberty, mutual respect for and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs and for those without faith as well as being very respectful and understanding of other cultures.
Students usually help themselves to continental breakfast in the morning, and return home from their lessons around a pre-determined time each evening (usually between 5.30 and 7.00pm). You will need to provide them with a simple supper. They will be tired after their busy day, but usually like to speak English over supper and are then often happy to watch a film/ TV or have an early night.
Hosts who have taken in foreign students in the past have found it an enriching experience, as well as finding it provides some extra family income. These can vary from £100 to £150 a week including bills, food and living expenses. You would also need to let your insurance know that you have a paying guest too. Because you have a tax-free allowance on revenue made from your home, your income from renting a room is likely to be completely tax free. You can make up to £7,500 a year before you start paying tax.
